Degree Completion

The School of Graduates Studies monitors students' progress and is the central office for ensuring that all degree requirements are met and students will complete their degrees on schedule. As students move through a graduate degree program, it is important to be aware of milestones that are required for successful progress. This section provides students with a timeline for completing a graduate degree. It also gives explanations, due dates, and links to forms that must be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in order for students to move efficiently through a graduate program. See the current USU General Catalog's School of Graduate Studies section for further information and policies.

Students at Utah State have 3 plan types available for master's degrees, and 1 option for doctoral degrees. All master's degree options are not necessarily available for every degree.

  • Plan A - requires preparation of a thesis; between 6 and 15 thesis credits are required.
  • Plan B - requires the production of a paper or creative work of art; at least 2 credits of thesis research are required.
  • Plan C - departmentally approved programs that include a culminating creative or integrative experience are available for some degrees; no thesis or plan B paper is required.
  • Doctoral - requires a course of study of 60 credits beyond a master's degree or 90 credits beyond a bachelor's degree.
