Internship FAQs

Why should I do an internship?

Internships are a great way to get real, legitimate work experience while still attending school. They are great for supplementing in-class work and learning with hands-on training, while still earning college credit. Internships are a great way to network and make connections that can prove invaluable when you begin searching for employment after graduation. They often give you the chance to explore other cities and environments for a semester.

What requirements are there to apply for an internship?

Students who wish to apply must be a junior or senior. They are also eligible to apply in the semester immediately after graduation. A 3.0 GPA is required.

How competitive is the application process?

Interns wishing to go to D.C. are competing with students from all over Utah, and in some cases, with students all over the nation. Utah’s Senate delegation works directly with all universities in Utah to make sure no one school is given preference over another, and the House members usually give preference who students who either reside or attend school in their district. Applying for other agencies and offices may be more competitive. Summer is the most popular semester for internships, with about twice as many applicants than spring or fall.

What do I wear for the internship interviews?

Students should dress as though they were going to a job interview. Business dress is appropriate with men in a button-up shirt, tie, slacks and dress shoes. It would also be fitting if men wish to wear a suit jacket. Girls can wear a business skirt and blouse, business pant and blouse, dress suit or pant suit with appropriate dress shoes. Both men and women should make sure their hair style and accessories do not distract from the interview.

What if my political beliefs don’t match those of the members of Congress from Utah?

You are still more than welcome to apply. As long as you can still perform your duties as an intern comfortably and to the best of your ability, your political beliefs will not disqualify you from an internship.

Can I obtain credit for an internship I obtain on my own?

Yes. It will need to be approved to ensure that it is an experience worthy of academic credit, and you will need to provide proof of employment. You will also need to provide the Intern Coordinator with details about your duties at work, length of the internship, and how many hours per week you will be working.

What do I do once I have been selected for an internship?

You will be responsible for getting your housing and credit taken care of. It is recommended that you meet with your academic advisor to determine how many credits you should sign up for, and once you are ready, you can register for them with the Federal and State Relations Office. The credits and requirements will be explained to you, and you will have to sign a contract stating you understand the requirements. You can also learn details about the housing available to USU interns in D.C. and sign up to live with other interns.

What costs am I responsible for in planning my internship?

Interns are responsible for all their own costs, including travel to D.C., paying for credit, and paying rent. Please make sure you have budgeted for these expenses.

Who determines my start and end date for my internship?

The dates you work will be determined by your specific office. They usually allow you to have input, and they try and follow the start and end dates of the semester as closely as possible.

If I have any problems arise during my internship, should I contact USU or tell my supervisor at work?

Interns are encouraged to be open with their supervisors in their individual offices. If problems arise at work, feel free to discuss it with them. If problems with housing, credit, etc., arise, contact the intern coordinator at USU for suggestions on resolving these issues.

What items to I need to bring to D.C.?

The apartments at Crystal Plaza are completely furnished. They have vacuums, dishes, microwaves, irons and ironing boards, televisions, DVD players, and most other things you will need. You will need to bring your own bedding for a twin bed (including pillows and blankets) as well as any bath towels you may need. If you don’t have room in your luggage there is a Bed Bath & Beyond at the Pentagon City Mall, which is only one stop over on the metro, or about a 3 block walk. You can also have things shipped before your arrival to the on-site RA.

You will also need to plan to bring items that will keep you comfortable in the weather conditions of D.C. The humidity causes both extreme hot and cold. It is advisable to bring an umbrella.
