Jazz Big Bands at Utah State University

More European Music in Nov. 20 Concert

LOGAN — Utah State University Jazz Big Bands perform the music of European composers for a second time in a concert Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.

The concert features Sandon Mayhew, Corey Christianson and Jason Nicholson.

“Christiansen and Nicholson are good faculty players who we wanted to feature during this concert,” said Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies and associate professor in the Caine College of the Arts. “Christiansen will be on the guitar and Nicholson will be on the drums.”

Gudmundson said this performance will focus on the music of England, Germany, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland.

Greg Wheeler, assistant professor in the Department of Music said the ensembles will play pieces by Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and more.

“Sandon Mayhew is joining us to perform Frank Zappa,” said Gudmundson. “I have toured with Mayhew before, and he was constantly quoting and humming Zappa.”

Tickets for “Big Band” are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and youth, $5 faculty and staff and free for USU students with valid ID. For more information and tickets, visit the CCA Box Office in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, call 435-797-8022 or see the college’s Production Services website (arts.usu.edu).
